BVI Crewed Catamaran Viking Dream wins "Best Multihull 2009" Award!

At the recent British Virgin Island (BVI) charter yacht shows, the crewed charter yacht Viking Dream won the coveted "Best Multihull under 50' award". Her owners and crew, Mark and Sally were obviously thrilled with the award, but this comes as no surprise as they work extremely hard on maintaining their yacht, keeping it updated and fresh, and striving to ensure that guests of all ages have fun on their yacht charters. Crewed Charter Yacht Pacific Wave takes 1st Prize at Virgin Island Culinary Contest!

The 72' monohull Pacific Wave is a recent addition to the crewed charter yacht fleet in the Virgin Islands, but her Chef, Mark Miles certainly felt comfortable taking 1st place in the recent St. Thomas, USVI charter yacht shows' culinary competition. Bruce & Laura Masterson, the owners and crew of charter yacht Amaryllis in the Virgin Islands are focusing their current efforts on the upcoming November Crewed Charter Yacht Show in St. Thomas Boat Show. They continue to make investments on Amaryllis, their 45' Privilege Catamaran, to keep her in tip-top condition for their charter guests.

Catamaran Amaryllis has two identical forward cabins each with double berth and en suite bath plus two aft cabins with double berths that share a bath, making Amaryllis ideal for two couples or a family of four. Having raised two kids on boats in the Virgin Islands, Bruce & Laura thoroughly enjoy having kids aboard. Bruce Masterson dreamed of sailing in the Caribbean while crab fishing in the frigid Bering Sea. He bought a schooner, got his USCG captain’s license, and began his career as a charter boat captain in 1979, chartering in New England and the Virgin Islands. Like any smart captain, he married his cook and in 1987 he and Laura moved ashore to start a family on St. John. They bought their first catamaran in 1990 and began taking guests out for day sails while raising two children. In 1996 they traded that boat for a cruising catamaran which they sailed in the Mediterranean, across the Atlantic to St. John, and finally to Florida. After a 7 year hiatus in the U.S. to get the kids through school, Bruce and Laura have returned to the V.I. to resume what they do best – introduce guests to the joys of sailing in the Caribbean. You’ll find Bruce a gracious host, ready to share his extensive knowledge of sailing and Virgin Islands lore. He knows the best anchorages, the best places to snorkel, and makes the best rum punch!

Laura developed a passion for fine food and sailing while catering private parties aboard a classic sailing yacht in New York Harbor. She met Bruce, they sailed away to the Caribbean as captain and cook on a charter yacht, and the rest, as they say, is history. Catamaran Madiba returns to the Virgin Islands!

Virgin Island Charter Yacht Madiba, the Leopard 45 cat, will be returning to the Caribbean, specifically the Virgin Islands. Captain and Chef, Peter and Colleen Leube, have purchased the share that was previously owned by former crew members Dave and Glywnnis.

Peter and Colleen have numerous years of charter experience and have enjoyed great success aboard Catamaran Fantasy Island and now Catamaran Zingara.

Peter and Colleen are still aboard catamaran Zingara, and they will continue sharing the helm with Rodrigo and Kerry-Ann on a 4-month-on – 4-month-off basis. Therefore, Madiba will only be available for charter when Peter and Colleen are aboard (and not aboard Zingara).

Catamaran Madiba is available for Christmas and New Years, 2009- 2010! Peter is a Dive Instructor and diving will be available for guests aboard Madiba.

Limin' on Charter Yacht Liberte in Trinidad!

Virgin Island based Charter Yacht Liberte', along with her crew, are currently docked in Crews Inn Marina in Trinidad and Tobago, safely tucked away from the hurricane season.

While there, the crew is busy as usual, undergoing their annual off-season re-fits and upgrades to Liberte'. These include newly painted decks, re-upholstered deck and cockpit cushions, revarnished interior floors, renewed interior cushion covers plus new bedding and curtains.

This charter yacht crew also has plans to add some new underwater lights to Liberte. The new addition will give their charter guests the ability to view fish life at night plus create a wonderful nighttime ambiance aboard Liberte.

Catamaran Swish takes on a new crew!

After two successful seasons aboard Catamaran Swish, veteran charter yacht crew, Euros and Emily, have decided to give up the helm. During their 2 years aboard "they have had the most amazing time and met incredible people, with wonderful memories to cherish".

Replacing them aboard Swish will be Andy and Elli, who come with recent charter experience in the British Virgin Islands. Currently, all 4 crew members are enjoying a training/hand-over week aboard Swish. Andy & Elli (pictured at right above) "have taken to Swish like ducks to water". Not only is Elli an amazing chef, and Andy a confident and capable captain, they plan to keep Swish in tip-top condition and give their guests aboard Swish the service they have come to expect.

Virgin Islands Charter Yacht League announces new Director!

The Virgin Islands Charter Yacht League Board of Governors in tandem with Flagship, a St. Thomas based Clearinghouse for crewed charter yachts, have announced Erik Ackerson as the new VICL Director. Originally from Kansas City, Erik has made the Virgin Islands his home since 1998. Erik is a resident of Water Island, one of the four United States Virgin Islands. He is also a member of the W.I. Search and Rescue, W.I. Civic Association, Navy League, as well as a Red Cross volunteer. Erik's love of the water and sailing yachts make him ideally suited for the position of Director of the VICL and its pursuit of advancing the betterment of the local charter yacht business in the Virgin Islands.

The VICL is a "not for profit organization whose purpose is to ensure the promotion of the highest quality yachting vacations in the Caribbean Sea."

Catamaran Breanker gets more than a makeover!

Charter Yacht Breanker has been sailing the waters of the Virgin Islands for years. However, her current owners and full time crew, Kristian and Marianne, have raised the allure of Breanker to an entirely new level. A recent charter guest aboard Breanker noted, "Kristian and Marianne were fantastic. They are experienced, friendly, very customer focused, and we would highly recommend them. Breanker has been GREATLY improved since our last charter 7 years ago, and the owners are continually upgrading during every layover."

With Kristian and Marianne at the helm, Catamaran Breanker is under the direction of a fun-loving and extremely experienced crew, now in their 16th charter season. Virgin Islands Carnival kicks of in St. Thomas, USVI!

April 6th was the kick off to the 56th Annual Virgin Islands Carnival. The theme for this years carnival is “A Cultural Escape for 2008.”

Highlights of this three week event will include the Calypso Spectakula, Prince and Princess Selection Show, and the Carnival Queen Selection Show. This three week party will also include music jamborees, calypso competitions, parades, samplings of island cuisine, pageants, and plenty of spirited local charm. The grand finale on April 26 features the ever-popular Adults Parade followed by an impressive fireworks display over Charlotte Amalie Harbor.

A yacht charter creates the perfect platform in order to take in this spectacle of fireworks during St. Thomas Carnival. It also allows guests the opportunity to pair a sailing vacation with a good dose of island culture.

Charter Yacht Drumbeat 1 and her whale of a tail!

The Virgin Island based charter yacht Drumbeat 1 treated some recent charter guests to a fantastic treat on their final day of charter. This humpback whale was spotted frolicking off the coast of Jost Van Dyke in the BVI. Drumbeat 1 and her guests were able to get up close and personal during their final sail from Jost Van Dyke back to St. Thomas in the USVI. Besides topping off a fabulous sailing vacation with a whale sighting, the guests aboard had this to say about the crew:

"The trip could not have been better. The boat was absolutely immaculate. Captain Vince, Chef Linda and First Mate Kirk were all terrific. Vince was funny and engaging, Linda is a superb cook, and Kirk...always enthusiastic and asking if he could get us something...does everything from serving drinks and meals, to rinsing dive equipment, to being a reliable first mate."
