As your BVI or Caribbean yacht charter approaches, a common question from many clients is: “How much should I tip our crew, and is there any sort of yacht charter tipping etiquette I should follow?”
While standard charter contracts and rate pages outline the customary percentage range, navigating the actual social etiquette and payment mechanics can feel daunting for first-time and experienced charterers alike. Tipping thousands of dollars across a hard-working crew requires clarity, discretion, and practical logistics.
This guide answers every question about crew gratuity, from baseline benchmarks and calculation rules to what your crew does behind the scenes, wire transfer timing, and the final-morning close-out ritual.

Across the BVI and Caribbean charter fleet, customary crew gratuity typically ranges from 15% to 20% of the base charter fee. While the amount is entirely discretionary and tied to the level of service you receive, budgeting 20% is the established industry benchmark for an exceptional experience.
Carefree Insider Tip: The Base Charter Rule
Gratuity is calculated strictly on your yacht’s base charter rate. Out-of-pocket expenses (such as an Advance Provisioning Allowance (APA), any delivery fees, cruising taxes/permits or sleep-aboards) are never factored into the tip.
Across our fleet tiers, customary 20% crew gratuities scale directly with the base charter rate:
First-time charterers frequently ask us: “Do guests really tip $5,000, $11,000, or $20,000+ at the end of a week?”
The answer is an unequivocal yes. Once guests step aboard and witness the extraordinary, non-stop dedication of their crew, tipping 20% becomes a natural and enthusiastic expression of appreciation.
Unlike resort staff who work set 8-hour shifts, your yacht crew is on call 24 hours a day for seven straight days. Their daily rhythm involves an incredible breadth of responsibility:
On a crewed charter, your 2 to 4+ person crew seamlessly trades hats dozens of times a day, serving as your licensed USCG Captain, executive chef, mixologist, marine engineer, tour guide, watersports instructor, housekeeper, and concierge all rolled into one cohesive team.

In the maritime charter industry, base salaries cover basic operational duties, but customary gratuities form a major, essential portion of a crew member’s total working income.
Running a luxury charter week requires immense physical stamina, emotional energy, and genuine passion for hospitality. Receiving an excellent 20% gratuity validates their tireless work, validates the extra personal touches they added throughout your week, and ensures these world-class professionals can continue doing what they love.
A common myth among charter guests is that you must carry thick stacks of physical U.S. currency through airports to tip your crew. In reality, direct bank wire transfer is the safest, easiest, and preferred method for both guests and crew.
1. Airport Safety & Convenience: Traveling with $5,000 to $20,000+ in physical cash creates unnecessary security risks and potential customs declaration delays at airports.
2. On-Island Crew Banking: On Premier and Luxury tier charters, gratuities routinely range from $10,000 to $20,000+. Island crew members living on catamarans do not have easy access to local banks to hold or deposit massive wads of paper currency.
3. Seamless Direct Deposit: Having funds dropped directly into the Captain’s or crew’s bank account via wire or secure transfer is far more practical, secure, and professional for everyone involved.
Carefree Insider Tip: Personal Checks Warning
Personal checks should never be used unless specifically stated in your charter contract as a viable tipping form. Many non-US crews do not have US bank accounts, and Caribbean banks incur extreme processing delays and heavy international clearing fees on non-local checks. Please note that our Carefree Yacht Charter clients are always made aware of all viable payment forms prior to the charter.
To ensure you can take your entire charter experience into account before deciding on the final gratuity amount, your tipping logistics follow a relaxed, stress-free schedule:
Pre-Charter & On-Charter Tipping Timeline
Approximately two weeks prior to embarkation, your Captain will send a welcome email introducing the crew and reviewing your preference sheet. Shortly after, roughly 7 to 10 days prior to your charter, you will coordinate a pre-charter phone call—a window that takes pressure off the crew during busy turnaround schedules. This call is the ideal moment to ask the Captain for their preferred bank wire routing details or digital transfer instructions. Keep these on file so you have them ready when you are aboard.
You do NOT need to send or initiate your wire days in advance.
Clients should take their entire charter experience into account (including your special farewell dinner and final night under the stars) before finalizing their gratuity. Initiating the bank wire during the final afternoon, after your final dinner aboard, or on the morning of disembarkation works perfectly fine.
Guests often ask if they should tip the Captain, Chef, and deck crew separately. On crewed yacht charters, the entire gratuity is traditionally presented directly to the Captain, who splits it co-equally among all crew members.
Whether you have a 2-person crew (Captain & Chef) or a 4-person crew (Captain, Chef, First Mate, Stewardess), every crew member shares equally in rewarding the collective team effort.
Even when sending gratuity via bank wire transfer, you should still enjoy a memorable close-out moment on your final morning.
We recommend bringing a nice handwritten thank-you card aboard. On your final morning after breakfast, hand the card to the Captain expressing your gratitude for the week. Mentioning inside the card that the wire transfer has been initiated maintains a warm, personal, and gracious tradition that crews deeply appreciate.
Because crew gratuity is performance-based, it should reflect the level of care, safety, and hospitality provided throughout your week.
In the rare event that you experience a service breakdown or operational issue during your charter, do not wait until the final morning or after you return home.
